I have been in Yarl’s Wood

I have been in Yarl’s Wood going on for eight months. What we are going through is a living hell – it is very hard for us due to the fact that we are monitored and limited to our basic needs – eg we can do very little on the computer, the food is not palatable and women are sick of it. Healthcare is very poor – we all suffer. I myself am very sick, I have a terrible back pain and I cannot get any medication or treatment. It takes forever to get an appointment to see the GP no matter how sick you are. I have been trying to get bail – it is a tedious process going back forth to court and I am ridiculed for asking to be set free.

[Yarls Wood is the UK’s only immigration detention centre specifically for detaining women]

There are still 15 people going

They are calling everyone and threatening everyone that they will send them away. They don’t have the beds. They cannot deny that the strike is going on – we have the papers to prove it. The papers are signed by them and they’re asking question why we are doing the strike and saying we are eating in rooms. We said no comment to everything. Things are moving here. The Scottish trade union V the secretary is coming to see us. He has sent a letter to the centre and the Home Secretary but they are not responding. A lot of people have dropped out but this is this the time things are happening. There are still 15 people going because some people couldn’t take it. The good thing is that they can’t deny it because they have given us the papers.

I’ve been in this country since 1987

I’ve been in this country since 1987 and all my family are in this country. And the way the Home Office are treating me is ridiculous. I’ve been here for 24 months which is a long time . The food they are giving us is ridiculous its not edible it tastes like water always plain rice and potatoes and the portions are so small. I came to the UK with indefinite leave – I went to prison for three months never more than 6 month and then. They can’t move me because I have family ties here I won a JR because they made a mistake.. My circumstances haven’t changed since 12 and why are they going to change now? I don’t have any ties in Bangladesh.  I only speak English, my first language is English.

The conditions are terrible: there are rats, I had to move to another wing because of the bed bugs in the middle of the night. Every single cell has bed bugs. They say they’re clearing them but there’s no change. It looks nice from outside, from the front, but it’s a cage, a dog kennel in here.

I was supportive of the protests, because there are human rights aren’t here. But I was in a different wing.

6 month I have been in here

The Problem is, 6 month I have been in here. It’s too long. I have been in this country for 10 years, working. I’m from Poland. My crime was a petty crime. That is not a reason to deport me. I’m not a terrorist. I just want to say, I have an alcohol problem, but this is not a reason to deport me to my home country, especially because there are people here that can help me with my rehab. I am seven month clean now without alcohol. I can also work at this organisation after my rehab.

The home office doesn’t understand this. The home office is not speaking to us, it doesn’t let us speak to them. They just send you back. They don’t listen. Nobody listens to us. Nobody knows what’s going on inside the detention centres. Some people are even self-harming. We are no criminals!

We have lived here for so long, worked in this country, paid taxes in this country, some people have family and kids that were born here. And now they just want to send us back!

I want to be released! Rehab is waiting for me outside and I can work afterwards for their organisation. I only did a petty crime, that is no reason to deport me.

I started studying in UK in 2010

I started studying in UK in 2010 – I passed my diploma. I got a position in a new college and sent an application and I got another visa for 2 years. 1 year into it I applied to a different college because the college’s status was revoked. My file was in process at the Home Office for 1 year and 7 months. They kept my passport the whole time, its still with them. Then they got in contact. The new college asked for my English certificate but it had expired (lasts two years). When I went for the test they needed my passport, they didn’t accept photocopies. I called HO and they didn’t respond. They couldn’t tell me how to handle anything. I tried multiple times over the 60 days. I couldn’t sit another test and paid for it but on the day they needed my passport. And I told the home office – I gave all this explanation and then sent it on the Friday. On the Monday, I got a refusal. After two days I got removal directions and the second time I went to reporting they gave a final refusal and they detained me then. It was in January and I am still here. They have refused my Judicial Review. Even then I wrote saying I have an outstanding case and they are not considering anything. I got a ticket yesterday but I had JR which they’ve now refused. I’ve been in detention for 2 months.

The centre is the worst – there are fights everyday. They have put us with the ex-prisoners. Everybody is in a bad situation and they are out of their mind. I don’t know where to go for justice.

Who can protest here? There was a person who was refusing to leave. They took him from a room and they beat him up. Nobody knows what happened to him. I could see through my door 8 to ten officers were taking him forcefully.

Nobody can hear us. I’ve heard people are dying here, not first-hand but I know guys have killed themselves. Its not on the news.

I’ve spent thousands of pounds to get study and I haven’t been able complete my studies and they have put me in jail. It is a prison to me, they treat us badly.

Good bye

Good bye. We will be moved to our home country today forcefully. Thanks for your support and everything. You people have done a lot for us I know. Thanks again.

I’m not eating

I’m not eating and the officers are telling me they are going to move me from Dungavel. They say that to everyone who is doing protest. They are trying to scare us. They don’t tell us where. No other centre will take me after the protest.

We are on hunger strike since last Tuesday. I think we are around 20 to 25 people, maybe more. We are very upset!

They can’t send us back. Some people have very bad situations in their countries. So they have to do something with us. That is what we are trying to do.

The home office doesn’t talk with us. Only the officers in here are trying to scare us.

We want the home office to do something with us!

I’ve been in detention for 10 Month. I went to bail 4 times, the judge refused me.

This place is harder then prison, because in prison at least you know when you get out. But not in here! Some people have been detained for 2 to 3 years.

For how long are they going to keep us in here? I want to know that!

There are some people in Dungavel

There are some people in Dungavel who have stopped eating and are protesting against the home office. They are not going to the kitchen. It’s not in human rights law what the Home Office is doing. They do everything to remove people – you have people here will families. They are destroying them. We have people here for two years. Two years. Can you believe it.

We have started like 50 people – what they have done is started scaring us. “We’ll put it in your file. We’ll log your phone. Well put someone with you for 24 hours. You can’t do this, we are the power here. They said they will move you if you take part.” How can we do peaceful protest? There is no one who can stop them.

The people know what happened here. If people are happy about what is going on here. Why can’t I protest, and why can’t I talk. If you are in prison, you know when you’re going out. But here, you can’t know. This is in the UK!

My story is very funny. I was married since 2012 with a French woman. I sent my application in 2014 and they asked for an interview. And they arrested me at the interview in Liverpool. They said I was overstaying – but I came here with my wife? They said my marriage is sham. They said that without even finishing the interview with my wife. He started telling her to leave the UK in 2 days. She was threatened with arrest. I have been arrested with no reason. I believed in the Home office and the law in the UK but since I don’t believe in it. I believed in it for nothing. I’ve never done anything wrong. And then to be put in Scotland 6 hours away from my family. And on the way, in the van, he said if you need to piss I will give you a bag. There were 5 people in the van and they couldn’t let me out. It’s not human – I felt like an animal.
